November 10th is the anniversary of the founding of the United States Marine Corps
One the eve of our War of Independence, on November, 10, 1775, the Second Continental Congress established the Continental Marines. After the war ended in 1783, the Continental Navy and its Continental Marines were disestablished.
The Marine Corps was re-established on July 11, 1798 by an act signed by President John Adams.
The Marine Corps birthday was the unofficially observed on July 11th until October 21, 1921 when Major Edwin North sent a memorandum to Commandant John A. Jejeune suggesting that the original birthday of November 10th be declared a Marine Corps holiday.
